the history of locs

The Origin of locs is debated upon as many believe Egyptians started wearing locs first. However, many believe that the civilization of Crete first wore the hairdo. Locs were furthermore worn as a sign of rebellion and unity in Ethiopia. Every culture brings different reasoning for wearing locs

What is the history behind locs?

According to The Encyclopedia of Hair, A Cultural History, the oldest historical record of an African tribe rocking locs can be credited to the priests of the Ethiopian Coptic religion, who were wearing the style as early as 500 BCE

Who invented hair locs?

The first known examples of the hairstyle date back to ancient Egypt, where dreadlocks appeared on Egyptian artifacts. Mummified remains of ancient Egyptians with dreadlocks have even been recovered from archaeological sites.

What’s the difference between locs and dreadlocks?

A notable difference between locs and dreadlocks is that one is a hairstyle and the other is a lifestyle. Locs are cultivated, but dreadlocks aren’t. Dreadlocks also often stem from Rastafarian beliefs, which use the style to separate believers from the rest of society.

When you ask Rastafarians about this, many will tell you that the difference between locs and dreadlocks is that one is a hairstyle and the other one is a lifestyle. The hairstyle is cultivated, dreads are not. They are free-formed to make a statement.

natural hair

The reason for [us wearing our natural hair] you might say is like a new awareness among Black people that their own natural appearance –physical appearance is beautiful and pleasing to them,” she said. Women became increasingly inclined to abandon products and practices that altered the natural state of their hair

Natural hair, by definition, hasn’t been altered by chemical straighteners, including relaxers and texturizers. Pressed hair may still be considered natural because once washed, the texture usually returns to its unaltered state (as long as no heat damage has occurred)
